Artistic Policy
New Theatre is both a production house and a venue.
We produce eight shows a year, including participating in the Mardi Gras Festival and the Sydney Fringe Festival. These plays are programmed by the Management Committee from recommendations developed by the Artistic Director, in consultation with the Artistic Associate and the Play Assessors, a panel of seven who read dozens of scripts every year in order to form a shortlist. This shortlist is checked with rights holders to determine availability for production, prior to licensing and programming the final selected plays.
The Artistic Director calls for Expressions of Interest from directors for each play and submits recommended directors to the Management Committee for ratification.
The director for each production assembles their team (designers, production and stage managers, and operators) in consultation with the theatre’s production team and holds auditions (announced on the website).
If you are interested in being considered as either a director or designer, please send your resume, marked Attention: Artistic Director, to manager@newtheatre.org.au
Though we don’t accept unsolicited scripts, we do host The Silver Gull Play Award, an annual competition for unpublished and unproduced work, with calls for entries announced on the website.
