A staged reading followed by a Q&A with the director and cast
Aspiring archaeologist Sophie left home when she was twenty, much to the shame of her traditional Jordanian mother.
Three years later, losing sleep and petrified by the judgement of her visiting ‘mad Arab’ Aunt Azza, Sophie is forced to lie about her life, her career and the existence of her Aussie girlfriend, to keep up appearances for her overbearing mother. Worst of all is the fear that she is lying to herself.
Donna Abela’s vibrant, funny and life-affirming play explores the common problems of many second generation Australians caught between two cultures. Like an archaeological dig, Sophie has to sift through layers of the past and present in order to find her own identity.
