BY CHRIS WOODLEY
“Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay. All of those children are being cheated of a sound start in life—yes cheated.” Maggie Thatcher, folks. 9 Oct, 1987.
In 1988 a student comes out to his mother outside a Headmaster’s office in South London. That same year the Tory government introduces Section 28, a policy stating that homosexuality is not allowed to be “promoted” in schools as something equal to heterosexual relationships. This policy will not be repealed until 2003.
Spanning two decades, NEXT LESSON looks at the enduring impact of Section 28 on that boy, the man he becomes, the school he attends and subsequently works at, and its wider community of parents, teachers and staff.
